War Memorial Does anyone living in the Irlam and Cadishead
area have any Information or details of personnel
that have served in the armed forces since 1945
and been killed in the line of duty. We are looking
into erecting a War Memorial in Prince’s Park
that will remember those that have been killed on
duty since the end of the Second World War.
There have been many conflicts since 1945,
Suez, Cyprus, Korea, Northern Ireland, Iraq and
Afghanistan to name just a few.

Irlam is situated on the north bank of the River Irwell, from which it almost certainly takes its name, being known in the 13th century as Irwellham. Until around the time of the arrival of the Cheshire Lines Committee railway and the opening of Irlam railway station, in 1873, Irlam remained a largely undeveloped village, on the southern edge of the peat bog known as Chat Moss.
The official Irlam coat of arms (right) was commissioned by the Irlam Urban District Council. You can clearly see flames raising from above the shield the flames represent the the once thriving industry of Irlam Steel Works.
