Know your Blood Pressure Campaign
On 26 April 2008 Irlam Rotary held their sixth annual 'Know your Blood Pressure' campaign in partnership with Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI).
This is one of our most important campaigns as we not only raise awareness of the links between high blood pressure and stroke but also work alongside rotary clubs to test thousands of members of the public.
Last year's campaign was a great success, with around 450 rotary clubs holding stroke awareness days that included blood pressure testing stations.
Across the UK people went to their local supermarket, shopping centre, community centre or church to get their blood pressure checked. In fact, we estimate that over 50,000 people had their blood pressure checked on the day.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, usually has no symptoms and, if not treated and kept under control, is one of the major risk factors for stroke. Both lifestyle changes and medication can help to control your blood pressure. This factsheet explains what high blood pressure is, the medications that are most commonly used to treat it and what you can do yourself to lower your blood pressure.
