Police Information And Crime Prevention.
Beat the Burglar
-
Remember to keep doors and windows shut and locked when you go out. It is also recommended that you try to keep your door locked even when you are in to prevent sneak in burglaries
-
Do not leave house or car keys on view as some burglars are using sticks fitted with hooks or magnets to fish through letterboxes to steal keys. At night when you go to bed remove the keys from the door and hide them in a drawer or any place out of site to prevent a burglar reaching in and using the keys to open the door.
-
Do not leave valuable items such as lap tops or mobile phones on view where they will be seen from outside the window – tidy them away.
-
You are urged to fit suitable locks to all windows and doors and ensure they are closed and locked on every occasion you leave your home unattended.
-
If you have an alarm, use it. By the taking the time to do this you will be making harder for burglars to break in.
-
Valuable property such as TV’s, DVD’s, VCR’s, Stereos, Cameras, MP3 Players, games consoles and mobile phones – often the burglar’s favourite targets - should be marked with your Post Code followed by your house number or first two letters of a house name. Property may be marked by etching, engraving, die stamping, branding, UVA marker pens, or by unique DNA systems like micro dotting or smart water. Ideally you should keep photographic and detailed records of valuables i.e. make, model and serial numbers and where possible receipts. You may wish to consider registering your property at a site such as www.immobilise.com. If you would like help in marking your property please contact the PCSO’s at Irlam Police Station on 0161 856 5386 (voice mail available).
