The Rotary Club of
Irlam received it’s Charter from Rotary International in 1969
and at that time had 28 founder members. Since that time the Club membership
has been as high as the mid 30s and currently the membership stands
at 27. The Club is
also involved with the larger area of Rotary District 1280 which
covers all of Greater Manchester, parts of South Lancashire and
North Cheshire and the Isle of Man, comprising some 50 clubs.
We enjoy our Rotary
and do our utmost to create an atmosphere of fun and fellowship
at all our meetings and events.
Our regular weekly meetings are held on Thursdays at 6.30pm
in the very comfortable surroundings of the Rhinewood Hotel, where
we enjoy a meal together and often listen to an invited speaker.
Other events take place at regular intervals throughout
the Rotary year. They are a mixture of social events, activities
aimed at fund raising or using our manpower and talents to help
the local community. Whatever the event, we aim
to enjoy ourselves and in many activities we are joined by our
partners.
What is the secret of our success? Back to Top
This is difficult
to analyse but is probably a variety of factors. Our meetings are held in a
very relaxed atmosphere, never rushed, and giving everyone the
opportunity to speak with other members. The diversity of our membership
brings with it a wide variety of characters and like minded people.
This Club in particular has raised and donated many thousands
of pounds to local and international Rotary charities, however
we never take ourselves too seriously and at our meetings friendly
banter and participation is encouraged.
This seems to be the pattern for our success, it works,
and continues to work.
Why do we want new members?
Every organisation
often requires new blood and whilst the Rotary Club of Irlam has
an increasing membership, inevitably membership is lost because
people move jobs, fall off the planet, or experience extreme pressures
of business etc.
Who are able to join Rotary?
We would particularly
welcome new young members who are keen to use their time and talents
for the benefit of the local and international communities. There is no age requirement
for membership of Rotary but young blood brings with it enthusiasm,
new ideas and perhaps a more modern approach to some of our activities.
Membership of Rotary
is by invitation only and potential members should be aware of
the following criteria:
·
of good character and ethical business, professional,
and employment reputation
·
to hold a position of importance and responsibility
within a recognised business or profession
·
to have a place of business/employment or your residence
in or near to the town of Irlam
What is Rotary? Back to Top
Rotary is the largest
service organisation in the world. It is an association of people
in business or professions who:
·
provide humanitarian service to the community at
local, national and international level
·
encourage high ethical standards in all business,
professional and employment vocations
·
work for peace, goodwill and fellowship throughout
the whole world.
Rotary gives its
members the opportunity to put something back into the community,
in recognition for what the community has done for those members
along their path of success and achievement in their chosen occupations.
What is expected of members?
As a Rotarian you
would be expected to make every effort to attend at least 60%
of all Club meetings. You
would also be expected to take an active part in at least one
of the Club’s action committees.
Service to the community requires Rotarians to devote time,
energy and professional skills to particular projects. This can involve fund raising
to provide charities with financial support but this is not the
primary function of the Club. The emphasis is on personal
service, hence the Rotary motto “Service Above Self”.
How do I join? Back to Top
If after attending
a number of our meetings as a guest of a member you believe that
you are able to offer a positive contribution to Rotary and to
this Club in particular, you may wish to express your interest
to your host. Any
membership proposal is treated in strict confidence. Once a membership proposal
form has been completed the entire membership of the Club is balloted
upon your suitability for acceptance into the Club. If a proposal is not accepted
the reasons for this will not be disclosed to anyone, including
the applicant. Rest
assured however that this will be no cause for embarrassment,
we will merely be complying with the strict rules by which all
Rotary Clubs are governed.
What Rotary is not! Back to Top
ROTARY IS NOT a secret
society. There are
no secret devices or sectarian, religious, political or racial
divides in Rotary.
ROTARY IS NOT a diners
club.
ROTARY IS NOT somewhere
to go if it’s a bad night on the TV.

Kitchener “Your Rotary needs you”. If you are interested in Rotary
